マティスは肖像画の制作について、｢作品の本質的表現はモデルの姿顔立ちの正確さにではなくて、全くと言っていいほどモデルを前にした芸術家の感情の投射に依存していると私は思う｣と述べています。また、｢表面は多少簡略に見えても、芸術家とそのモデルの内的関係の表現であるヴィジョンが現れてくる。制作中になされた細やかな観察をすべて含んだ素描からまるで池のなかの泡のように内部で発酵したものが湧き出してくるのである｣とも語っています。

Regarding the creation of portraits, Matisse stated, 'I believe that the essential expression of a work does not depend on the accuracy of the model's appearance, but almost entirely on the projection of the artist's emotions in front of the model.' He also said, 'Even if the surface appears somewhat simplified, the vision that emerges is an expression of the inner relationship between the artist and the model. From the drawing that includes all the detailed observations made during painting the process, something fermented inside bubbles up like bubbles in a pond.'
