1907（明治40）年、安井はフランスに渡り私立の画塾アカデミー・ジュリアンに入学すると、ジャン＝ポール･ローランスに師事しました。本作は3年近く通った画塾を辞し、自由な制作を試み始めた24歳頃に描かれました。
砂糖壺に反射する4つの小さな白い四角は窓の光でしょうか。薄暗い部屋の様子からは、自らの芸術を生み出そうと模索する画学生の生活がうかがえるようです。
In 1907 , Yasui went to France and enrolled in the private art school Académie Julian, where he studied under Jean-Paul Laurens. This work was painted around the age of 24, when he left the art school he had attended for nearly three years and began to experiment with free creation.
The four small white squares reflected in the sugar jar might be the light from a window. The dimly lit room suggests the life of an art student exploring and striving to create his own art.
