本作の裏には、副題として｢突然の日差し(coup du soleil)｣と記されています。おそらく厚い雲の間から強い日差しが差し込んだ瞬間を捉えたのでしょう。生い茂った緑や草原には光が満ち溢れています。わずかな雲間から日差しが届くそのようすは、異なった色彩を見せる左右の木々や牛にあらわれています。その奥には紫や黄などきらめくような色彩を反映しながら、セーヌ川が流れています。
1912年、ボナールはヴェルノン近郊のセーヌ河岸の斜面に建てられた別荘｢マ･ルロット(私の家馬車)｣を購入しました。そのテラスからは低地を流れるセーヌ川と対岸の町ヴェルノンを望むことができました。ボナールは自宅の庭をあまり整備せず、自然のままにすることを好んだといいます。｢マ･ルロット｣の近くで描かれた本作には、ボナールが好んだノルマンディーのありのままの自然を見出すことができます。
The back of this work bears the subtitle "Sudden Sunshine (coup du soleil)." It likely captures the moment when strong sunlight pierced through thick clouds. The lush greenery and meadow are bathed in light. The sunlight breaking through a small gap in the clouds is reflected in the different colors of the trees and cows on either side. In the background, the Seine River flows, reflecting shimmering colors such as purple and yellow.
In 1912, Bonnard purchased a villa called "Ma Roulotte" ("My Caravan") built on the slopes of the Seine River near Vernon. From its terrace, he could look out over the lowlands of the Seine River and the town of Vernon across the river. It is said that Bonnard preferred to leave his garden mostly untouched, allowing it to remain natural. This work, painted near "Ma Roulotte," reveals the natural beauty of Normandy that Bonnard cherished.
