伊豆・下田は牛島がよく訪れた土地の一つです。この作品は下田の白浜にある板戸港での写生をもとに制作されました。水平線が曖昧な画面には淡い光があふれ、穏やかな自然とそこに生きる人間の営みが、温和な色彩で描かれています。日が差し込む雨上がりの海にはゆったりと小船が浮かび、堤防や岩肌は静かに輝きを放ちます。画面中央の堤防には、釣人たちが座って海面に糸を垂らしています。その中に一人だけ、海を眺めるような人物が佇んでいます。牛島はたびたび作品に一種の自画像ともいえる点景人物を描き込みました。ここでも自身を投影しているのでしょうか。この人物の存在は幻想的な自然描写と相まって、見るものを牛島独自の絵画世界へとひきこむかのようです。
牛島の作品はじっくりと取り組んだ写生をもとに、アトリエで時間をかけて再構築されたといいます。そうして生み出された独自の形態と、丹念に塗り込めた淡い色彩からは、静謐な趣が漂います。本作でも、やわらかい光に包まれた港の光景が、簡略化された形態描写によって詩情豊かにあらわされています。
Izu Shimoda are places that Noriyuki Ushijima frequently visited. This piece was created based on sketches made at Itado Port in Shirahama, Shimoda. The screen, where the horizon is ambiguous, is filled with soft light, depicting the serene nature and the activities of people living there in gentle colors. In the post-rain sea, small boats float leisurely, and the breakwater and rocky surfaces quietly shine. On the breakwater in the center of the screen, angler sit and cast their lines into the sea. Among them, there is one person standing, seemingly gazing at the sea. Ushijima often included a small figure in his works that could be considered a kind of self-portrait. Perhaps he is projecting himself here as well. The presence of this figure, combined with the fantastical depiction of nature, seems to draw the viewer into Ushijima's unique world of painting.
