The Thatched-Roof House
La chaumière

1879, Oil on canvas, 48.5 × 64.5 cm

In August 1878, Monet moved to the small village of Vétheuil, located about 70 kilometers northwest of Paris along the Seine River, where he spent over three years. During this time, his wife Camille passed away, and the period was one of hardship and poverty in Monet's life. However, many of the works created during this period would later serve as the foundation for his subsequent series of paintings.

In this piece, the overall subdued color palette is contrasted with the vivid blooming of flowers in the foreground, created through brushstroke division, while the fresh sky is depicted with strong brushwork, capturing the flow of the atmosphere.
